Creepy turnout: Organizers: Cullman’s Zombie Crawl to be annual fundraiser

Who knew the undead walking the streets of downtown Cullman could be a good thing?

The city’s first ever Zombie Crawl on Saturday may have looked like a sign of the apocalypse as 70 residents in tattered, bloody clothes and lifeless faces staggered and moaned down sidewalks. But the event, which raised $1,445, actually served a good cause, two in fact: Victim Services of Cullman and Mental Healthcare of Cullman.

The Victim Services of Cullman and Mental Healthcare of Cullman provide help and services for victims of child abuse, sexual abuse, domestic violence and rape and local residents with mental health and psychological issues. The two organizations will split the proceeds for their respective programs, organizers said.

“With it being our first time, I was really pleased with the turnout, and a lot of people brought their kids, had their faces painted. Everyone had a big time,” said Donna Jacobs, executive director of Victim Services of Cullman.

Besides the zombie crawl, makeup artists were on hand painting residents’ faces to look like zombies, an instructor taught participants how to do the Michael Jackson “Thriller” zombie dance sequence and later a mob “Thriller” dance was held. Prizes were also awarded for oldest and youngest zombie, best zombie costume, best zombie walk and biggest zombie group.

“I’d say overall it was a success, and we plan to make this an annual event for Halloween,” Jacobs said.
