Chamblee’s, new Chinese restaurant on the way to Arnold Village Shopping Center

CULLMAN — Some vacant storefronts in the Arnold Village Shopping Center will be filled soon, as Drinkard Development has struck a deal with two restaurants to lease space in the Cullman center in the coming months.

Chamblee’s Restaurant, currently located in Hanceville, will soon be moving into the now-defunct Movie Gallery location. The space was vacated about a month ago, as the corporate office that owns Movie Gallery closed every store nationwide — including two in Cullman.

“While it’s a hit anytime you lose a tenant and lose the monthly rent, there is also a loss of jobs for the community,” Jason Grimmett, with Drinkard Development, said. “Normally, at best you have a six month time frame to get a new viable tenant in, but we are very pleased to announce that we have already leased the space ... to Chamblee’s. They offer great steaks and fine Italian food, and their chef comes from running one of the finest restaurants in Chicago to be a part of this venture, and I think everyone is in for a great surprise when they open.”

In the adjacent storefront beside Sweet Peppers Deli, the PeKing Chinese restaurant and sushi bar will be the latest tenant to call the space home. The new business will likely create at least a half dozen or more food service jobs.

“They will have a limited area for dine-in, but will offer take out and a sushi bar,” Grimmett said. “We have worked with these folks before and they always do a great job and prepare fresh and quality food.”

PeKing will occupy the 1,460-square-foot storefront, which was formerly home to the Floor Space store.

“The space is currently being completely renovated to fit PeKings’ needs,” Grimmett said.

Both restaurants are slated to open within the next six weeks.

As new development and tenant deals ramp up, Grimmett said he believes it is a sign the recession is turning around.

“We see things picking up in the economy, especially locally,” he said. “I believe people are starting to have a little more confidence.”
