CULLMAN —
After a light sleet Wednesday afternoon, expect rain this afternoon and throughout the evening.
The National Weather Service is predicting showers to linger through the night, with a possible thunderstorm rolling into the mix before morning. The high today is expected to reach 53, while the low will be 50.
A chance of rain will continue Friday and Friday night before sunny skies prevail Saturday.
In the news
The Town of West Point and the West Point Volunteer Fire Department will host a community meeting at 6 p.m. tonight at the town hall.
Mayor Kenneth Kilgo will provide information on upcoming projects, including the paving of County Road 1242, two new community storm shelters, and other information regarding the future of the town. West Point Fire Chief Tim Martin will discuss upcoming changes and improvements on the horizon for the volunteer fire department.
Finger food will be provided.
Tonight is also the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual gala. In fact, this marks the 70th year for the chamber and several special features are planned for the event.
Look for continuing coverage from area basketball teams as well as developments in the Alabama Legislature.
At the end of the week, Cullman officials will be visiting Tulsa, Okla., to find out if the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame board of directors will choose the local community for its attraction.

The Cullman Police Department’s Equalizers class will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 26 and March 5 at the Cullman Wellness and Aquatic Center. Officer Cindy Rohrscheib will be instructor for this class for women ages 13 and older. Cost is $25/household for student manual, free to those who already have the student manual. All need to register to ensure your space in the class. Forms available at the Aquatic Center or by email: cindyr@cullmanpd.com or call Officer Rohrscheib at 256-736-4703. Many techniques taught and applied during the class.

Chamber seeking full-time tourism director; creates new board
The Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce is ramping up its focus on tourism, and is now seeking a full-time tourism director. The agency has also created a new, 11-person tourism board to focus solely on promoting travel and tourism in the area.
Plans to add a full-time tourism director have been in the works for almost a year, in cooperation with the City of Cullman and Cullman County Commission. -
Unsheltered International leads local effort to help storm victims
From their hometown of Cullman, to Joplin, Mo., and even Staten Island, NY., Dr. Travis Sharpe and members of Unsheltered International have provided hot meals, shelter, and delivered supplies to those in need after a natural disaster.
