VINEMONT —
Hammers clanging against a building may be the only sound coming from the Vinemont Sports Complex at the moment, but pretty soon, those sounds will be replaced with the crack of bats.
Construction workers took advantage of mild temperatures and sunshine Monday to begin some of the finishing touches on the concession stand and scoring building, which is part of a $1.3 million project proposed to have five baseball/softball fields.
“It’s been a field of dreams for the community for a long time,” Vinemont Mayor Melba Patton said.
According to South Vinemont public works official Mike Graves, the building, along with several fields should be ready for youth baseball and softball opening day in April.
“We’re trying our best to get it open in April if the rain will hold off,” he said.
When finished, the two-and-a-half story concession stand will include an office space, an assembly area, an umpire changing room, and a score keeping area. In addition, the new sports complex will have three fields ready, two of which will be lit. Up until now, teams have had to share the same facility with the Vinemont High School softball team.
“This is something we’ve been in desperate need of,” Patton said. “There’s been a lot of enthusiasm grown in the community. The town and community have been so supportive throughout it all.”
When Patton ran for her first term as mayor of South Vinemont 16 years ago, ballfields were one of two platforms she ran on. However, because of the severity of the sewer system when she took office, a new sports complex was put on the back burner until 2004 when the sewer system was completed. Though it’s taken longer than expected, Patton knows the extra time will be worth it in the end.
“It’s been slow,” she said. “But it’s definitely going to materialize. We’re all looking forward to it.”
