CULLMAN —
An Albertville man is being held in the Cullman County detention center following a high-speed chase Thursday afternoon east of Cullman.
The chase began shortly after 3 p.m. near Convent Road in Cullman, when officers attempted to make contact with Danny James Cofield, 22, of Albertville, on probable cause suspicion that he was allegedly in possession of an undisclosed narcotic.
According to Cullman assistant police chief Craig Green, Cofield allegedly fled from police, driving east on U.S. Highway 278 before patrol deputies with the Cullman County sheriff’s office also joined the pursuit.
The suspect racked up a host of traffic violations in the process, allegedly driving his white Chevrolet sedan out of the City of Cullman and turning onto County Road 728 before circling back toward the city via County Road 703 (Welti Road).
Instead of allowing the suspect to lead the chase back toward a populated area, Cullman K-9 officer Matt Schlosser used his vehicle to perform the Precision Immobilization Technique, commonly known as the PIT maneuver, to force the sedan to stop.
“After the PIT was successful, the driver decided to try to get out of the vehicle and flee on foot,” said Green. “Schlosser is a K-9 officer and, between himself, one of the narcotics officers and Suki, the dog, they were able to detain the suspect. In the process, the suspect was bitten by the police dog, and EMTs responded at the scene.
“After examining the suspect, they cleared us to transport him to the hospital in our custody to ensure his injury was not serious. We believe the suspect sustained only a minor injury as a result of the bite.”
Cofield was charged with reckless endangerment, attempting to elude and resisting arrest. He was also issued several traffic citations.
Cullman County sheriff Mike Rainey said late Thursday the investigation into Cofield’s alleged drug activity is ongoing, and that additional charges against him are possible.
