CULLMAN —
A Cullman bank was robbed early Thursday afternoon, though the suspect didn’t actually get away with any cash.
First Community Bank in Cullman, located at the corner of the Marktplatz shopping center beside Maurice’s clothing store, was robbed at approximately 12:45 p.m. by a suspect described as a bald, white male.
The man reportedly entered the bank and passed a note to a teller demanding money. He walked out of the branch with an undetermined amount of cash, but dropped it outside when a dye pack exploded. He then fled the scene.
Bank officials say all of the stolen money has been recovered from the street outside.
“It was essentially an attempted robbery, as we recovered all the money within an hour,” First Community Bank President Billy Faulk said. “The employees did an outstanding job following their security protocol and thankfully no one was hurt and everyone was okay. We appreciate the police and their efforts in bringing this man to justice.”
Authorities say the man fled the scene in a gray, four-door sedan with a Jefferson County license plate. He remains at large as of press time.
The incident comes on the heels of an attempted robbery in late November 2012 at Traditions Bank, where a suspect fled after other bank employees became suspicious when he passed a note demanding money to a teller. That suspect, a black man identified as Huntsville resident Cedric Hicks, remains at large. Hicks has been dubbed the “ballcap robber” and is wanted in connection for several robberies around the southeast.
