Commission signs agreement with Chamber to fund 222

The Cullman County Commission took another step forward in helping the I-65 and County Road 222 interchange project become a reality this week.

During a meeting Tuesday, the commission agreed to ratify Chairman Kenneth Walker to sign the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce agreement to fund the project. With $2 million of local matching money to meet the required 80/20 Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program (ATRIP) funding, the Chamber of Commerce offered in January to put in $1.3 million of that from its share of a local lodging tax that was recently made available with the payoff of a bond. The county, city of Cullman, and City of Good Hope will each pay 10 percent of the remaining balance. In addition, the Chairman was authorized to sign the memorandum of understanding for the project, which encompasses the agreement between the three entities.

“I just want to say a big thank you to the Chamber for doing 70 percent of the 222 interchange project,” Walker said. “Because of that, we’re able to do a huge project for a lot less cost.”

A resolution was also passed to authorize the issuance, execution, sale and delivery of $2 million principal amount General Obligation Warrant of the Cullman County Commission and the payment thereof. County Administrator Gary Teichmiller was authorized to co-sign with Chairman walker on the bank account at Premier Bank for project funds.
