The Cullman Times won first place for education news coverage in 2011, and placed in several editorial and advertising categories in the Alabama Press Association’s annual Better Newspaper Contest.
The Times’ won first place education news for reporting by Digital Editor Trent Moore, Editor David Palmer, and graphic work by Jessica Wells. The newspaper also placed second in the best sports page category under the leadership of Sports Editor Rob Ketcham.
The Times also won second place best economic coverage for work done by Editor David Palmer, Digital Editor Trent Moore, reporter Ben Bullard and the editorial staff.
In the online reporting categories, The Times won second place for creative use of multimedia for “Cullman Christian School site appeal rejected.” News Editor Amanda Shavers-Davis and Digital Editor Trent Moore compiled numerous video testimonials to accompany the online version of the story.
“We’re always pleased to see individual and team efforts recognized by our peers in the news business,” Times Editor David Palmer said. “More importantly, the awards from the Alabama Press Association are a reflection of our commitment at The Times to cover a wide range of issues that affect our community. The award for cullmantimes.com is also an indication of our growing strength in reaching a wider audience through the digital platform.”
The Times’ advertising department also netted several awards, including first place for best regularly scheduled special section for “Profile 2011: Distinguished Citizen,” by Jessica Wells and Kathy McLeroy.
The advertising department also scored second place for web special project; second place for best presentation of online advertising; third place for online revenue-building for the “Bridal Guide;” third place for “Our Story” by Jessica Wells and Kathy McLeroy; and second place for “The Cullman Times Job Section” ad by Jessica Wells and Debbie Miller.
