CULLMAN — Here's what's happening today:

Traffic news:

The Cullman County Road Department will continues working on County Road 1436.

The Cullman City Street Department will have a patching crew working in various parts of the city. Drivers should exercise caution when approaching working crews.



Weather:

Keep those umbrellas handy and sports drinks cool: Today will be a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1 p.m. Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 97. Heat index values as high as 103. Calm wind. Later tonight, a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72. Calm wind around 5 mph.



Best bets:

Bring your musical instruments: The Town of South Vinemont will hold a jam session at 6 p.m. at the Scout House at 66 Ridgeway St., Cullman 35058. Info: Town Hall at 256-737-5411.



Ready your shopping list! A reminder that today through Sunday is the Tax-Free Disaster Preparedness weekend — purchase your severe weather ready items, tax free! Items include:

• Several types of batteries, including cell phone batteries and chargers

• Battery-powered radios

• NOAA weather radios

• Flashlights, lanterns, and emergency glow sticks

• First aid kits

• Duct tape

• Plywood, window film or other materials, specifically designed to protect window openings

• Portable generators

• Gas or Diesel fuel containers

• Tarpaulins and plastic sheeting

• Any non-electric food storage cooler or water storage container

• Non-electric can openers

• Any artificial ice, blue ice, ice packs, or reusable ice

• Fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and carbon monoxide detectors

• Ground anchor systems such as cords or rope or tie-down kits

The covered items must cost $60 or less, except for generators, which are covered as long as they cost $1,000 or less.

Park Art summer program for kids: The Cullman Arts Council is gearing up for the Park Art program and are now taking reservations. Park Art will be from July 16-20, from 9 a.m. to noon each day at The Arts Center, 1609 3rd St. SE, Cullman 35055. Activities will include theater, water color, drawing, sculpting and pottery. For children ages 5 through 12 years (no on-site registration this year), cost is $50, with a discount for families registering more than one child: second child is $40; third child is $30. Price of registration includes a Park Art T-shirt. Make checks payable to “Cullman Arts Council.”

Cullman County Democrats: This group will not meet in July; meetings will resume in August. Also, no breakfast meetings until August.



Cullman County students: Free and reduced price meal applications for children in Cullman County Schools under the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program for the 2012-13 school year are available at the Cullman County Board of Education and/or at the local schools offices.
