A two-vehicle high-speed accident at the intersection of Ala. Highway 157 and Experiment Station Road ended with a Cullman man spending Saturday evening in the Cullman County Detention Center.
Chaney Champion, 34, of Cullman was jailed for public intoxication after the truck he was driving, a 1988 Chevrolet, failed to slow from an alleged speed of more than 70 miles per hour to avoid a 2002 Chrysler Town & Country van, driven by Devin Errett of Cullman, as the van attempted to turn left off highway 157 onto Experiment Station Road.
Police said Errett went to Cullman Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.
Champion submitted to a breathalyzer blood alcohol test, which allegedly revealed he had consumed some alcohol — but not enough to be charged with DUI.
According to Cullman office Joseph Duncan, the truck, which was traveling north on highway 157, crossed the highway and struck the side of the van as it turned off the highway. The wreck closed both lanes of Experiment Station Road for approximately 45 minutes.
Remarkably, said Duncan, the accident resulted in only minor injuries.
"The van had a carload of people in it — two adults and four young kids," said Duncan. "It's surprising that no one was really hurt, considering the high rate of speed the truck appeared to be traveling. There were skid marks where Champion tried to brake that went about 180 feet, so he appeared to be moving pretty fast. Everybody was really lucky."
