UPDATED: 74-year-old Cullman Co. man struck, killed by train early Friday morning

CULLMAN — A 74-year-old Cullman County man was struck by a train early Friday morning in and died from his injuries at the scene, according to law enforcement officials.

The Cullman County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the incident, which occurred 1.5 miles north of Alabama Hwy. 157 on the rail line that runs through the heart of the city and county. The man had reportedly walked to the tracks before being struck by the train.

Cullman County Sheriff Mike Rainey said the man lived within two miles of the tracks, near the community of South Vinemont. Investigators beieve the man may have been suffering from Alzheimer's or dementia, which led him to wander onto the tracks.

"From what we can gather by talking to the conductor, he was possibly trying to get out of the way, but it was too late," Rainey said. "We believe he was disoriented, which is how he ended up there."

Authorities have not released the identity of the victim, pending the notification of his next of kin.
