Polls open at 7 a.m. Tuesday for District 11 runoff

The race has already been whittled down to two, and by 7 p.m. Tuesday only one candidate will remain for the Alabama House District 11 Republican nomination.

Longtime Fairview mayor and Cullman County Commission of Aging Director Randall Shedd will face off with former Cullman County school board member Danny Alldredge in the runoff election today. Polls open at 7 a.m.

The seat was vacated when former Rep. Jeremy Oden left for a state appointment, which set the stage for a special election to fill the seat. Shedd and Alldredge carried the most votes in February’s primary, which eliminated newcomers Mike Graves and Lydia Haynes.

The winner of Tuesday's runoff will face Democrat Kelly Evans in the upcoming specially-called general election on May 7. But whoever wins the general election will not have much time to get acclimated to their new position, as the current legislative session ends May 20.

Residents of District 11 are the only local voters who will be able to participate in today’s election. Residents living in east Cullman County, or east of U.S. Highway 31 or north of Alabama Highway 157 in the City of Cullman are likely eligible to vote in the primary — as well as in the special general election — until a winner in the race has been decided.

Cullman County is currently represented by delegates elected in House Districts 9, 11 and 12.

Anyone unsure of their district should contact the Cullman County Board of Registrars at 256-739-3530 or 256-775-4697 to make sure they live in an area that qualifies them as District 11 electors.
