The Garden City town council has passed a proposal to extend cell tower usage, which will save the town about $5,200 per year.
American Power is leasing the cell tower to Garden City.
“The basic proposal is that they would sign an agreement to do a one-time payment fee and extend the monthly contract to five years,” Mayor Tim Eskew said.
“It just makes more sense to do it that way; there’s more money for Garden City and the general fund.”
In other business at the recent council meeting, the mayor and council discussed an areawide cleanup effort.
“Every year we do a spring cleanup, like other towns, where everyone can bring their excess stuff to the city yard across from the city hall,” Eskew said. “The county provides a dumpster for the materials. We will take everything except for chemicals. In past years we wouldn’t take tires, but this year we will take tires, as well, but a limited number of them.”
Pam Leslie, Garden City’s town clerk, said the countywide cleanup is April 20, but the following six days will be dedicated to cleaning up Garden City.
“Garden City residents will be cleaning the streets and town for the week of April 20-27,” Leslie said.
