Residents in Cullman County got quite the light show during the overnight hours Monday as a powerful thunderstorm rolled through the area.
In Hanceville, lightning knocked the town’s transmitter and phone system offline according to Mayor Kenneth Nail.
“It’s been a heck of a mess,” Nail said Tuesday afternoon.
For several hours, all 911 calls were diverted to the county. Crews had the phone system back up and running at 2 p.m.
Nail said he didn’t have an idea of when the transmitter would be back up and working.
Around 200 customers across Cullman and Winston counties lost power during the overnight thunderstorms. Another 200 lost power during the morning hours after a second round of thunderstorms moved through the area.
“It was scattered all over the county in little pockets,” Cullman County Electric Cooperative spokesman Brian Lacy said.
He added all power was restored by mid-morning.
In the city, Cullman power board spokesperson Mike Manning said roughly 30 to 40 residents in the northwest section of town lost power for a brief period of time.
Cullman County Emergency Management Agency Director Phyllis Little said her department received several reports of downed trees, but that was the extent of things.
“There were some trees down, but that’s really all we’ve heard,” Little said.
The forecast for the rest of the week calls for hot and humid conditions, with temperatures in the mid to upper 90’s and a heat index near the 105-degree mark. Little said a typical summer time pop-up storm can’t be ruled out.
