It may have been a cool, slightly damp night — but that didn’t stop several thousand kids and adults from packing the Cullman County Fairgrounds Saturday for the 11th annual Youthquake.
Organizer Shane Quick estimates the crowd fell about 1,000 shy of matching last year’s high of nearly 10,000 people, but he was still very pleased with the turnout considering the overcast conditions.
“It went really well,” he said. “The weather was a little tricky with the rain and the cold, but people still came out in droves and had a blast. It was definitely a great success.”
Despite the clouds hanging over the fairgrounds for much of the day, the rain held off until headliner Switchfoot took the stage at 8 p.m. The band played for about an hour as a slight drizzle started to fall, and lead singer Jon Foreman performed half his set from the crowd with a spotlight cutting through the mist.
“Switchfoot did a really good job and we feel like it went well,” Quick said. “We’re so thankful we got the whole show in and didn’t have to stop anything.”
Behind the scenes, Quick said he and his staff were watching a live weather radar in case the event needed to be called off for lightning. But, with storms bearing down, the skies stayed clear enough to let the concert come to a natural close.
“There was a major rain storm coming right at us, but then it split us at the last minute,” he said. “It definitely feel like the Man Upstairs was looking out for us.”
Looking toward Youthquake 2013, Quick said they’ve made a few notes on tweaks they can implement, and they’re already reaching out to potential headliners in the Contemporary Christian Music field.
“We’re really looking forward to next year now,” he said. “I know we’ve talked with Hillsong United, Toby Mac and a few others. We’ve never had Hillsong. I do their touring and I know they are very aware of Youthquake and we would love to have them if we could work it out.”
