CULLMAN —
Mayoral races in two south Cullman County towns will be decided Tuesday, when voters at Colony and Garden City will go to the polls to settle close August finishes between the top two candidates in each race.
A third town, West Point, will also decide its Place 2 council spot in Tuesday’s election.
In order to declare an outright winner in Alabama races that field three or more candidates, the top finisher must take 50 percent of the total votes cast — plus at least one additional vote. All of Tuesday’s runoff races continue the municipal elections held countywide on August 28.
Colony’s next mayor will be new to the office, after incumbent Morris Fitts lost the August race to the top two finishers — each a current town council member. Voting will take place at the Colony town hall.
The top finisher, council member Patrick Ward, received 50 votes in August, followed closely by Place 4 council member Donnis Leeth, who received 47 votes. The two outpaced Fitts, who finished a distant third with 23 votes. Colony’s runoff election will be held at the Colony town hall.
At Garden City, incumbent mayor Harden Davis faces a runoff challenge Tuesday from Tim Eskew. Eskew gained 59 votes to Davis’ 45 in the August 28 election. Larry “Bird” Walker finished third with 14 votes.
Garden City’s Place 5 council seat will also be decided in the runoff. Incumbent Pat Chafin took 45 votes in August, compared with runoff challenger Teresa Martin Goodwin, who received 32 votes. Chafin and Martin finished first and second in a four-way race that kept Place 5 candidates Bucky S. Martin and Frank Nall out of the runoff.
Voting for the Garden City runoff will be held at the Garden City town hall.
At West Point, voters will decide the town council Place 2 runoff race between Darion Daniel and Brad Smith. Daniel took 74 votes to Smith’s 59 in the August election, while Shannon Mattox finished third with 30 votes. West Point’s town hall serves as the town’s polling place.
Polls at all locations open at 7 a.m. Tuesday and close at 7 p.m. Voting in the municipal runoff elections is open only to residents of the towns where elections are being held.
