Broadband Internet available in Baileyton

BAILEYTON — Residents of Baileyton now have access to high speed Internet thanks to Cyber Broadband.

No other company who offers cable or telephone service planned to offer high speed service to the area.

Jay Fuller owns the local Cyber Broadband, and wanted to offer his service to rural areas. The company worked with the East Cullman Water Board to place equipment on the Etha water tower.

Interested residents can come to the Baileyton Town Hall and see the service firsthand.

“We will have the broadband free at the town hall for a year as a demo,” town clerk Patricia Gilbert said.

This will extend broadband Internet access to most every resident in Baileyton.

“Residents can come into the town hall and see how fast it is,” Gilbert said.

The council also discussed the upcoming football season at the town park.

Youth league football president Tammy Lamons was concerned about the condition of the field. The council assured her brick dust from baseball season which is still on the field will be removed soon

The concession stand supervisor, Penny Guthrie, will continue to run the stand during football season. The football program will be responsible for paying her throughout the season.

Mayor Johnny Dyar said she has done well with the concession stand and the town is happy to have her.

“She has done a great job,” Dyar said. “You have nothing to worry about with her.”

Lamons was hoping to save the football league some money by recruiting volunteers to work the concession stand. In the past, the volunteers have done the work, but due to damage to the concession stand, the mayor and council decided to let Guthrie operate it throughout the season.

“I would like to see Penny run it because when we took it over it was a mess and we worked hard on it,” Dyar said. “We got the new coke machine, ice machine, slush machine and nacho machine and spent a lot of money on it.”

The town maintains the field, lights and water at the park and said they should be able to pay the concession stand workers.

“When the town started out, we were in the hole, but now we have made money this year in our concession,” Dyar said.

In other business, the council:

‰ Will invite accountant Scotty Segroves to next meeting to discuss his services.

‰ The Bluegrass Festival will be Sept. 26 at the town park. The town plans to offer $25 prize to the winner of the buck dancing contest and a jam competition will award a $50 to the winner. There will be three judges for the contest. The town will have the concession stand open, and there will also be vendors selling food, drinks and other things. Vendors will be charged $40.

‰ Looking to purchase two heaters for the senior center.

‰ Dyar said the horse show was a success and plans to have it again next year.

‰ Aug. 22 is the football jamboree and Holy Pond and the first home games are Aug. 29.

‰ Decided that people wishes to rent the town hall or the park pavilions will have to pay within two days of renting it. If canceled five or more days before event, money will be returned in full.
