Town holding back to school bash
By Tiffany GreenColony Town Council member Patrick Ward is hoping to ease the financial burden for some families this school year by organizing a back-to-school bash to distribute school supplies.
“My goal is to give back to Cullman County and give students what they need for back to school,” Ward said. “We are facing hard economic times, but it’s very important for the kids to get an education, and to get that education they need proper supplies.”
The event begins 3 p.m. Saturday at the Vivian B. Allen Park on Byars Road in Colony.
“This is something the community needs, and it’s something the kids need,” Ward said. “This will let the kids know that we care about them, and it will get them excited about going back to school.”
Ward said there will be school supplies given away.
“We will go by tickets. Once they run out, the school supplies are gone,” Ward said.
Along with free school supplies, children and their families can also enjoy free food and drinks.
“There will be free hot dogs and drinks sponsored by Pepsi,” Ward said.
Ward said the town will not bear any expense from the event.
“This is coming out of our pockets to help our community,” he said.
Ward, along with Mayor Morris Fitts and council member Edward Webb Jr., have organized the event.
“I want all of Cullman County to come,” Ward said. “The kids are our future, and we want to provide for the children of the community.”
Other events planned will be a word of encouragement from Cullman County sheriff Tyler Roden and from Cullman County School Superintendent Hank Allen.
“The sheriff will discuss some safety issues with the children,” Ward said.
Birmingham native and recording artist Ree’Al and local artist 24U will perform.
“I can’t promise everyone will get school supplies, but I can promise everyone will have a day of fun.”
Ward said there will be a special surprise at the end that people do not want to miss.
Ward also wanted to thank these sponsors.
“Without the help of Wal-Mart, Big Lots, Pepsi and many individuals, we could not have done this event,” he said.
