Colony hires new part-time clerk

COLONY — The Town of Colony has hired a new clerk. Kristie Williams has been on the job two weeks and seems to be enjoying it.

Williams previously worked as an accountant for nine years. She graduated from Wallace State Community College and Springhill College in Mobile with a degree in accounting. She was hired through the Wallace State Career Center.

Williams was hired on a part-time basis for $8 an hour. Her normal hours will be Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“For right now she will be part time and as needed until we can get our finances in order,” Mayor Morris Fitts said.

“Everything is going good so far,” Williams said. “We are focusing on steady growth. That’s what I’m here for.”

Martha Foster, who has been volunteering as interim town clerk, has been working with and training Williams.

“So far she has been a plus and everything is looking good,” Fitts said.

One of her first jobs as clerk is helping to organize the upcoming holiday three-on-three basketball tournament.

The event will be Saturday, Dec. 12 at the community center. It is to raise money for the Krayola Kids Daycare Center and the town’s park and recreation department. The tournament is open for anyone. Cost is $20 per person or $60 per team. Registration deadline is Dec. 4. Payment needs to be brought to the town hall.

The winner will receive $150 and runner-up will get $50. The town will also be selling Boston Butts and concession stand items. Call the town hall at 287-1192 for more information.

Fitts also said there are currently openings for children at the Krayola Kids Daycare. The daycare accepts child age six months to 12 years old. Fees are $18 a day or $70 per week. There are also openings for the after-school program which costs $5 a day. Daycare hours are from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The next town council meeting will be 6 p.m. Dec. 4 at the town hall.

It is small and located on the edge of campus, but the students there say it houses a variety of interesting courses for aspiring farmers, business owners, or people just looking to improve their gardening skills.
