Train vs. car, no one injured

JOHNSON’S CROSSING — Sean Hart, 32, had driven County Road 917 at least a hundred times to reach his Johnson’s Crossing home, but Thursday afternoon was different.

At approximately 3:40 p.m., Hart’s car was struck by a train engine at the road’s railroad crossing. The engine was not carrying any railroad cars when the accident occurred.

Hart’s vehicle was heavily damaged, but he was not injured in the crash.

“I just live right over there,” Hart said, standing in the gravel beside his wrecked Maxima, pointing across the road.

Living near the railway, Hart said passing over the train tracks became routine over time.

“You just get used to going through that intersection,” he said. “I’ll definitely think about it now.”

This is the first recorded accident involving a train and vehicle in Cullman County in 2009. There have been 135 reported accidents involving trains in Alabama in 2009, with eight fatalities, according to the Federal Railroad Administration Office of Safety Analysis.
