CULLMAN —
The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will hold a public meeting next week to discuss the welfare of native game fish species at Smith Lake.
The meeting, set for Monday, July 30, will feature biologists with the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries presenting information on recent surveys gauging the population of largemouth and Alabama Spotted bass at the Lewis Smith Lake reservoir.
The meeting will be held in the activity room of the Community Health Systems building in Jasper. The building is located at 204 19th Street East; the meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.
Conservationists, anglers, property owners and anyone interested in Smith Lake and its ecology are welcome to attend.
Smith Lake was recently named among 11 destinations featured on the newly-formed Alabama Bass Trail — a tourism draw for anglers that borrows much of its marketing method from the state's successful Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. The 21,000-acre man-made lake is regarded by competitive fishermen as a particularly attractive fishing spot for spotted bass.
In addition to population trends in the lake's stock of spotted and largemouth bass, the meeting will address bass management goals, regulations, and the possible use of bass tournament exemptions for harvest restrictions.
A 13-15 inch protective slot limit for largemouth and Alabama spotted bass has been in effect at Lewis Smith Reservoir since 2005. The limit is intended to produce greater numbers of larger bass, while allowing anglers to take the abundant “pan-size” fish less than 13 inches, as well as bass greater than 15 inches.
For detailed directions, contact the Walker County Chamber of Commerce at 205-384-4571. For more information on topics to be covered at the meeting, contact Alabama District III Fisheries Supervisor Jay Haffner at 205-339-5716 or at Jay.Haffner@dcnr.alabama.gov.
