For those living in Garden City, the upgrade and replacement of old water pipes from the town’s original water system has been sporadic since it became a priority within the last decade.
But thanks to a boost in the amount of a $15,000 grant from the Cullman County Community Development Commission (CCCDC), Mayor Hardin Davis said if all goes as planned, the project should be finished within the next six months.
“We’ve got the big part done that takes time and money,” Davis added. “We’ve worked hard trying to get it done. Once we get it fixed, the town will be in good shape.”
In addition to the town of Garden City, four other organizations also received grant money during the CCCDC’s monthly meeting last week.
The Fairview High softball team was also awarded $15,000 to help build a concession stand at the softball field, while the West Point Band Booster Club was given $12,000 to purchase band equipment.
The Cullman County Center for Developmentally Disabled received money in the amount of $9,691.22 to supply an uninterrupted power supply to a group home. Grandview Community Center will use its $834.89 of grant money to seal the existing parking area and walking trail.
The CCCDC was created through a House bill passed in the Alabama Legislature in 2009. According to an Alabama statue passed in 2006, all counties who receive certain monies were required to pass local legislation to distribute it. The Tennessee Valley Authority money in question accounts for an extra 3 percent added to the 75 percent of funding north Alabama counties receive from TVA’s annual in-lieu-of-taxes payment to the state. The 3 percent is paid only to dry counties that are TVA customers.
As stipulated in the bill, 50 percent of the alcohol money is automatically dispersed amount the municipalities based on population.
