GOOD HOPE —
After over 50 years of service to the community, a local iconic restaurant is preparing to serve its final meals.
Tonight, at 10, Jacks Restaurant in Good Hope will be closing its doors for good.
Known best for their fried green tomatoes, homemade onion rings, and cheeseburgers, it’s a decision that owner Wayne Walker said wasn’t easy.
“The economy is the main thing,” he said. “When it went south, our business did too. It hasn’t picked back up, and I don’t see it coming back up for a while.”
Walker, along with Baileyton town council member Walker Mead, have owned the business for roughly 15 years. Walker said when they took over, closing the restaurant is not what they had planned. Instead, he had hoped to retire there one day.
As word began to spread of the restaurant closing, Walker said many came pouring in, including Sunday, which he added was quite busy.
“We had a very good Sunday crowd,” Walker said. “There were lots of handshakes, hugs, and even a few tears.”
Walker thanked customers for their loyalty over the years.
“This is very hard,” he said. “All of our customers, and the people who work here have become like family to us. I hate to see it come to an end, but we’ve enjoyed our time here.”
