WEST POINT — Two members of the West Point town council recently visited with Rep. Robert Aderholt in Washington, D.C., to ask for money for a new municipal complex for West Point.
Council members Steve Link and Gerald Schaefer said they had a productive visit and were able to discuss the proposed municipal complex.
Kilgo recently sent an appropriations request for the West Point Municipal Complex that will be located on Hwy. 157 in the old Doris Diner location to Aderholt’s office.
The $850,000 request includes a municipal building, parking lots and access roads.
“We have got a real opportunity to get funded for this municipal complex,” Kilgo said. “Looks like we have a good chance to get it ear-marked for 2011.”
The town’s matching part would be only five percent and would be covered by the appraised value to the property.
“This is money well spent to go up there and be able to speak with the representatives face to face,” Kilgo said.
The town already owns the land and the existing structure located there.
“We are going to make this happen,” he said.
Kilgo submitted another request for a sewer system extension and plant upgrades. He said the 2.5 million dollar upgrade would be a multi-phase, multi-year project lasting from 2010-2014. The project would allow for expansion of the sewer system down Hwy. 157 to allow for growth of the town.
Town council member Vivian Woods resigned from the council effective Feb. 22. She recently began a job through NARCOG and will be training with town clerk Joyce Sapp for the next 12 months. She will be paid through NARCOG with no cost to the town.
The town hopes to have Woods take over the town clerk’s position after the year of training.
“It’s a great program to promote jobs through the region,” Kilgo said.
The town will hopefully be ready to appoint someone to fill her position at the next council meeting.
In other business, the council:
* Approved the purchase of a Pro-Turn 252 lawn tractor for $7,055.55 for town use.
* Heard brief presentation from Darrell Hicks, who is running for Place 1 commissioner on the Republican ticket.
* Will purchase an ad in the Cullman County Sports Hall of Fame book for $100.
* The next council meeting will be April 12, at 6 p.m. at the town hall.
