CULLMAN —
Oktoberfest organizers still want alcohol sales at Festhalle Market Platz — but there are apparently a few more hoops they’ll have to jump through, first.
The event board announced plans to feature two biergarten tents at the late October festival last week, with one filtering into the back of host site Festhalle, under the assumption the city parks board already allowed alcohol sales at the site.
Apparently, the parks board has yet to actually approve the request — meaning at the moment, alcohol will not be allowed at Festhalle.
“I knew they were working on the civic center for alcohol to be OK’d there, and I thought Festhalle was included, which was incorrect,” Oktoberfest board member Ernest Hauk said. “I misspoke, and thought Festhalle was included, but the park board has not taken that up, yet.”
The event board hopes to feature two beer tents this year, after the resounding success of the privately-run biergarten at last year’s event, which drew record crowds.
When the mistake was realized, the Oktoberfest board made a formal request to the parks board to allow sales at Festhalle for the week-long event, set for October 6-13.
“We’ll see what the park board says, and we hope they’ll approve this so we can move forward,” Hauk said.
City parks director John Hunt said the board has received the request, and it will be considered at a meeting set for noon on Tuesday, August 21 at the Cullman Civic Center.
“The park board will look at what is best for the event, and for Festhalle, and make that decision,” Hunt said.
Any alcohol sales on city property must be approved as a special event. To date, only the Cullman municipal golf course and Heritage Park have hosted alcohol sales since they were approved by referendum vote a little over a year ago.
