Heritage Park, Smith Lake Park hosting 4th of July firework shows

In lieu of shooting their own fireworks, Cullman County residents may attend Desperation Church’s fourth annual firework festival at Heritage Park, or the county’s annual show at Smith Lake.

Desperation Church was issued a permit allowing them to shoot fireworks within the city limits.

The event begins at 7 p.m. on July 4, and admission is free.

“We realized there wasn’t a fireworks show in the city,” said Andy Heis, the pastor at Desperation Church. “ We love bringing community and family together.”

Heis and Craig Green, Cullman’s assistant police chief, said the event was family-oriented with an emphasis on safety.

The firework show will last twenty minutes, and the gates of the park will close around 9 p.m.

“The show will be visible throughout the town,” Heis said. “At the park, we’ll have vendors with food and drinks, and there will be a slip and slide.”

As a part of the show, WKUL-FM 92.1 will have music coordinated with the firework display.

To ensure the safety of onlookers, the Cullman City Police will provide officers and emergency personnel.

To further ensure the safety of the viewers, as well their entertainment, the festival’s fireworks will be set up and managed by Pyro Productions of Alabama. According to Heis, the Adamsville, Alabama, based company is also responsible for the firework festivals in Birmingham, Alabama, and Smith Lake Park in Cullman County.

“They will show up sometime Thursday to begin setting up,” Heis said. “And at the festival the equipment will be safely roped off with firemen nearby.”

In addition to the festival at Heritage Park, Cullman County Parks and Recreation will also be celebrating the Fourth of July at Smith Lake.

Smith Lake Park’s Fireworks and Music Festival kicks off at 8 a.m. with DJ Scott Adams. Throughout the day other music acts will perform, and there will be several food and arts and crafts vendors, as well as contests, a parade, putt-putt golf, and a swimming pool.

The day will culminate with a fireworks display at 9 p.m.

Admission to the park is $5. Additional info can be found on the Cullman County’s Parks and Recreation Facebook page.
