150+ come out for Duck River property owners meeting

HOLLY POND — Though she will likely lose the place she has called home for the past 35 years, Cullman County resident Linda Chumley said she is content to be able to play a role in bringing a new water source to the area.

Chumley, owner of 17 acres in the Duck River watershed, attended an informational meeting hosted by the city Tuesday night at Holly Pond High School to learn the fate of her property. More than 150 people, mostly property owners, were able to meet with city officials and discuss appraisals, relocations, surveys, engineering and state regulations as part of the event.

The Cullman Utilities Board is in the early phases of commissioning a 640-acre lake with a six-mile pipeline and a 32-million-gallon-per-day capacity to serve as a secondary water source. The approximately $68 million reservoir and dam will be located east of Lake Catoma, in the northeast portion of Cullman County.

Chumley said she believes the dam project is in the best interest of the area, though she is sad that giving up her home and relocating will likely be a necessary part of the process.

“I think it’s a good thing, but I have some mixed feelings and I’m a little sad,” she said. “But, this’ll be good for the community.”
