CULLMAN —
The 10th annual Touring Farms for Kids will be June 23 and June 24.
Touring Farms for Kids was developed to give kids the opportunity to see where their food and other products come from and the hard work involved. They get an opportunity to see what Cullman County has to offer and also what kind of careers are out there in the agriculture industry.
The tour is free and open to children age seven to 13.
“We want kids to see their dinner doesn’t just appear on the table, there’s a lot of hard work that goes into it,” said Jamie Troutman with Cullman Economic Development Agency, who helps to organize the tour.
“We want to get children outside and let them get their hands dirty. Farming is critical to our existence and is largely responsible for our family values,” said Agriplex Chairman Tom Williamson.
Activities will include visiting the Archery Park, traveling to A-OK Farm, Smith Farms, Camp Meadowbrook, visiting with a local veterinarian, fishing at Sportsman’s Lake Park, Auburn Experiment Station and more.
The participating children will be given vouchers to purchase produce from the vendors at Festhalle Market Platz Farmers Market.
“We try to promote Cullman County agriculture and try to keep the kids interested in it and teach them about agricultural fields,” said Tim Scott with Soil and Water Conservation.
He said with Cullman County number one in agriculture in Alabama, children need to learn about careers in agriculture related fields.
“It’s the biggest business we got and we want to keep the kids interested in it,” he said. “We try to hit a little on every aspect of it.”
Lunch, snacks and T-shirts will be provided to each child who attends.
Touring Farms for Kids began in 2000 as a result of a vision held by members of the North Alabama Agriplex Board. The Agriplex is an 11-member board established by the Alabama Legislature dedicated to educating the public on the importance of agriculture and preserving that way of life.
This program is sponsored by the North Alabama Agriplex Board. It is coordinated by the Cullman Economic Development Agency, the Soils and Water Conservation District, Auburn Experiment Station, Cullman County Economic Development, First South Farm Credit, Cullman Area Career Center and other volunteers.
