The old phrase “rub some dirt on it” was taken to a whole new level when the Stony Lonesome OHV Park in Bremen hosted its first-ever Dirt Therapy Day on Saturday.
Combining the winding dirt trails on the 1,456-acre park and a steady summer rain, dirt therapy quickly became mud therapy. Nearly 300 people piled into the parking lots in their trucks and jeeps while unloading Gators, 4-wheelers, RZR’s and dirt bikes to get a little dirty during the all-day event.
“My goal is for everyone to leave with a smile on their face,” OHV park worker Tyler Lindsey said. “It’s a perfect day for this event. There is mud everywhere, and everyone likes mud. We do have events here, but we’re also open five day days a week, so there’s a lot to get involved with and enjoy here.”
Stony Lonesome is a public OHV park that is open year-round. The park features trails for ATVs, rock crawlers, dirt bikes, mountain bikers, equestrians and hikers. It is located seven miles outside of Dodge City on Alabama Highway 69.
Although this was the first Dirt Therapy Day, operation coordinator Bryan Grimmett said the park hopes to make it an annual event.
“We have a lot going on here and we want to keep this event going,” Grimmett said. “We have food, fun, mud; You can find anything you want here. With the event, we first want to promote safety, but we also want everyone to have a good time. This is a Cullman County park, and we want everyone to enjoy it and use it. We’d love for more people to get involved with it.”
Grimmett said the day’s activities began with a mud bog (mud race), allowing vehicles to zoom through a coned-off race pit. Even spectators had the chance to get a little dirty, as the vehicles whipped, glided and glided, often streaming thick mud through the air. The event also featured a live band, night ride and contests.
The OHV park is open to the public Thursday-Monday from 8:30 a.m.- 5 p.m. and closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Cabin rentals are also available for overnight or weekend stays. The park will host a UTV Rally Raid on July 20.
