Fireworks laws differ in city, county

For those who live in the city limits of Cullman, shooting fireworks requires a permit, but in Cullman County it’s fair game to have your own personal firework show — as the Oden family has been doing for 29 years.

Alabama Public Service Commissioner Jeremy Oden said what started as a family celebration at Oden Farm in Eva, grew to a community firework show as they hosted around 2,000 people at the event last Saturday.

“We have the show the Saturday before the Fourth of July each year so it doesn’t conflict with anyone else’s celebration,” Oden said. “We also give away a family pack of fireworks, do a kiddie show and have a safety course involving the fireworks.”

Oden’s mother, Carol, owns Precious Collections florist, which sells fireworks each year for the Fourth of July. Oden is one of many who enjoys the family get-togethers surrounding Independence Day and the elegant display of fireworks.

For those who live in the Cullman city limits, assistant Police Chief Craig Green said a permit is required to shoot fireworks. He said to his knowledge only one has been granted by Mayor Max Townson and the city council at this time.

“We encourage people to be safe and understand city ordinances prior to using fireworks inside the city limits,” Green said. “The permit that was issued is to Desperation Church. The church will be using Heritage Park for their fireworks show and I encourage the public to attend one of the licensed shows inside the city limits or inside Cullman County. Desperation Church always puts on a professional and family oriented fireworks show.”
