MORNING UPDATE FOR MONDAY, AUG. 20, 2012

CULLMAN — Morning commuters will find heavier traffic throughout the morning as students throughout Cullman County return for a new school year.

Police officers and deputies will be at or near schools in full force this morning to help with traffic control and to make sure the younger children have safe dropoff points near schools.

Be aware, too, that school buses will begin running their school-year routes this morning. They will be stopping at various locations to pick up children.

This will also be the first school year that starts with a statewide ban on texting while driving. Law enforcement officials will be on the look out for violators, particularly around school zones where children are on foot.

WEATHER

The beginning of school is being with a clear, sunny day. Expect a high temperature of 85, remaining mostly clear tonight and dropping to 58 degrees.

Tuesday is also expected to bring clear skies with similar temperatures.



POLITICS

Political forums start again this week with tonight mayoral session in Baileyton. The Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affairs Committee and The Cullman Times are hosting the forums.

Tonight’s forum starts at 6 p.m. at Parkside Catfish Restaurant. The forum is open to the public.



MEETINGS

Organization meetings for the day include Bosom Buddies Support Group at 6 p.m. at the Education Center, Cullman Regional Medical Center.

Overeaters Anonymous meets at 9:30 a.m. at the Carriage House at Grace Episcopal Church.
