State and local law enforcement agencies will partner to step up patrols of Alabama highways over the long Labor day weekend, launching a three-day effort to ensure traffic safety remains a priority for motorists.
During the holiday period, which began at 6 p.m. Friday and will end Monday at midnight, Alabama’s Integrated State Law Enforcement Task Force is encouraging residents to keep safety in mind, whether celebrating at home, traveling the state’s roadways or enjoying time on the water.
Officers from state-level law enforcement agencies will work together to create a highly visible enforcement presence — one intended to prevent crimes and moving violations that lead to deaths and injuries.
Alabama public safety officials said motorists should expect to see officers — even in unmarked vehicles — making enforcement stops.
Cullman County sheriff Mike Rainey said Friday his office will be similarly visible over the three-day weekend.
“Our guys will be out in force, looking for people who may be driving impaired, enforcing compliance with seat belt and texting laws, and just being a presence on roadways in Cullman County as a means of deterring unsafe driving and especially to enforce the law on DUI offenses,” Rainey said.
“The goal is to let people know that we’re out there, and to be available to assist with the increased holiday traffic load. We just want to try to make it a safe holiday for everybody.”
Alabama’s Integrated State Law Enforcement Task Force reminds the public to:
Avoid driving or boating while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Restrict access and closely monitor teens to prevent underage use of alcoholic beverages.
Pay attention to speed limits and driving conditions on the road, and obey boating laws on the water.
Watch out for swimmers and other boaters.
Watch for debris in the water or on roadways.
Use seat belts and child restraints in motor vehicles, and life vests on the water.
Take care when using grills, never leaving them unattended and placing them a safe distance from lawn games, play areas and foot traffic.
Keep children and pets from potential danger by designating a 3-foot “safe zone” around the grill.
