City orders $350,000 in water dept. equipment

By taking advantage of some left over bond money, the City of Cullman has purchased more than $350,000 in upgraded equipment and vehicles for the Cullman water and sewer department.

The department purchased a $160,000 tri-axle dump truck from the state bid list; a $95,000 backhoe loader; a $20,000 large equipment trailer from state bid list; and 20 wholesale water meters from HD supply at a cost of $76,336.

The money was set aside as part of a former bond issue and must be spent for water department supplies.

“The money was left over for that purpose and has to be spent within a segment of time,” city clerk Wes Moore said. “It’s not coming from the budget. It was already there in a separate account.”

Water superintendent Chris Freeman said the bond money will help his department update some outdated vehicle and equipment that are necessary for day-to-day operations. He also noted the water meters are much more accurate and efficient than the older models.

“This is all equipment we need, absolutely,” he said. “The meters should pay for themselves within a year.”
