— Representatives from area Boy Scout troops gathered at TP Country Club this week to honor Dennis Borwick and Ron Seybold, each of whom garnered an ovation for their long participation in, and contributions to, local scouting life.

Hosted by the Boy Scouts of America Greater Alabama Council, Thursday’s luncheon celebrated the enduring vitality of scouting in the Cullman area. In summarizing the state of scouting in Cullman County, troop 219 representative James Haynes told other members of the area’s 16 active scouting units they reflected the tradition’s “great strength and growth.”

Alabama State Treasurer Young Boozer, himself an Eagle Scout, provided the keynote speech to Thursday’s luncheon. Boozer enjoined scouts to carry forward the organization’s memorable “Be Prepared” motto, recounting how the practical skills and mental discipline he learned as a Boy Scout have enriched both his personal and professional life.

“I joined scouts over 50 years ago, and the first thing they taught me was the scout motto: ‘Be Prepared,’” said Boozer. “Fifty years passed, and much has happened to me in my life, and I’ve been faced with a lot of challenges.

“But over those 50 years — everything I’ve gone through; all the things I’ve had to respond to — I can look back on what I learned in Boy Scouts, and I can see what it meant to me; what it meant for me to be successful in life.”
