CULLMAN — Dorthy’s not in Kansas anymore. This week, she’s landed in Cullman.

Several dozen local children will have a chance to display their acting talents Saturday as the Missoula Children’s Theatre presents “The Wizard of Oz” at the Cullman Civic Center.

“We’re looking forward to it,” Cullman City Parks and Recreation Marketing Director Waid Harbison said.

On Monday, 120 children from the Cullman area, ranging from kindergarten to 12th grade, spent two hours auditioning for parts. According to directors Dan Watson and James Scotland, 61 made the cut. Those who were selected spent Tuesday perfecting their lines and roles before the numerous run-throughs scheduled for the remainder of the week after school.

“We have two rehearsals each day,” Watson said. “We teach everything in the show, and starting Wednesday, we’ll do the whole show.”

For some, practice started as early as 30 minutes following the release of cast members.

“It’s very quick,” Scotland said. “But they’re kids. They learn fast. We’re looking forward to having a good week with the community.”

Harbison said the Montanta-based organization has been coming to the Cullman area for the past 15-20 years.

“This is my favorite, because it’s so unique,” he said. “It reaches out to a lot of kids across the county, and allows an opportunity for those who like theatre but don’t have a drama program at their school.”

Saturday’s performances will take place at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
