Property owners in Duck River watershed invited to public meeting

CULLMAN — Property owners in the Duck River watershed will have a chance to ask questions about the upcoming Duck River Dam project next month, as the Cullman Utilities Board has scheduled a public meeting to inform residents about the process.

The event, which is being held for those who own land in the watershed, is set to begin at 5 p.m. on Feb. 15 at Holly Pond High School. The city plans to send invitation letters to the land owners beginning this week.

Duck River project liaison Dale Greer said the meeting will allow stakeholders a chance to meet the people they will be dealing with throughout the land acquisition process.

“This is for the individual property owners who will be affected to see these people and ask questions,” he said. “Even if they don’t get the formal answer at the time, they’ll learn who these people are and who to get in touch with in the future.”

Instead of a public forum, Greer said the meeting will have a more face-to-face format to allow individuals to ask specific questions. Coordinators and experts will have separate booths around the room, and property owners can discuss the topics that are most likely to affect them.

Construction of the dam is scheduled to encompasses a six-mile pipeline and 640-acre lake with a 32-million-gallon-per-day capacity. The approximately $70 million water source project will be located east of Lake Catoma and in the northeast portion of the county.
