Cullman Primary wins state reading award; East is runner-up

CULLMAN — Two schools in the City of Cullman claimed the top spots in the Exemplary Reading Award for the State of Alabama. Cullman Primary School won the award, chosen by the International Reading Association, while East Elementary School was the state runner-up.

“I am honored to accept this award on behalf of the faculty and staff at Cullman City Primary School. The faculty and staff at the Primary School are dedicated professionals and work tirelessly to ensure the success of all of our students,” Primary School Principal Tricia Culpepper said. “Our parents are also to be commended for their work in reading to their children at home to help develop our students’ reading ability. We also have a wonderful group of volunteers who read with students on a daily basis at CCPS. We couldn’t do it without the help of so many people who are interested in the future success of our students.”

The Exemplary Reading Program Award recognizes outstanding reading and language arts programs at all grade levels. The primary school has been a runner-up for the award the past several years, though 2012 marks the first overall win.

Culpepper said she believes it speaks highly of the system as a whole to have two schools recognized among the best in the state.

“Having two schools from the same system finish at the top of the state is a further testament to the teamwork and effort put forth by the teachers, staff, students and parents in this system,” she said. “It is very gratifying to be part of Cullman City Schools.”

Cullman City Schools Superintendent Dr. Jan Harris said she is excited for the system, and proud of the hard work that has been recognized.

“I am elated, but not surprised that Alabama’s Exemplary Reading Program Awards committee would select the Primary School as this year’s state winner along with East Elementary as the runner-up,” she said. “Both schools are secure with strong principals like Tricia Culpepper and David Wiggins, master teachers, supportive staff and devoted parents. We are fortunate to have such strong community support of our students as well.”
