Busy Bee adding to night life

Cafe joins ranks of downtown businesses opting for later hours

CULLMAN — On the heels of last week’s Celebrate Cullman, another downtown business is opting for the night life.

Beginning tonight, Busy Bee will extend its hours on Friday and Saturday until 9 p.m.

Owner Kitty Spears said the restaurant will close around 2 p.m. on those days and reopen at 4 p.m. with some new items on the menu aimed for the evening dining crowd.

“We’re adding shrimp skewers, popcorn shrimp, barbecue and dinner salads,” Spears said. “Of course, we’ll still have the Busy Bee hamburgers.”

Behind the move is Spears’ intent to join with other merchants in creating a fun evening setting for area residents.

“As a merchant I want people to come downtown. We were open last Friday for Celebrate Cullman and it was a great success. So many people came out to enjoy the entertainment and the stores. I would like to see this grow and I would like to see people move downtown into the loft apartments that have been talked about.”

Spears said her sons, Stevie and Kyle, will run the evening hours on Friday and Saturday.

“We already have some staying open at night like the Downtown Grill. We want to be a part of providing people a place to go and enjoy themselves,” Spears said.

Restaurants such as Carlton’s, Local Standard and Downtown Grill have been welcoming evening crowds for many months. Spears said she believes the trend of later hours will be welcomed by the local community and visitors alike.

“I just feel like downtown is the heart of the area,” Spears said.

Interim Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce president Leah Bolin shares Spears’ assessment of downtown.

“Downtown is the heart of the entire area. Having a thriving downtown is essential for the rest of the community,” Bolin said. “I think our community enjoys those extended hours, and that was noticeable at Celebrate Cullman. When we have the extended hours, people can get off work and relax and visit some of the shops that they would otherwise miss.”
