The popular “Won’t you be my neighbor?” song from the classic Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood television show is the inspiration behind the upcoming commUNITY Fiesta on May 4 in Cullman.
In an effort to better unite the different ethnicities in Cullman, Lisa Eckenrod, Joe Holmes, both of Cullman Rotary, and others have created the commUNITY Fiesta allowing families from different backgrounds to come together for a free day of fun at Sportsman Lake.
“We’re trying to establish better relations between the Anglo and Spanish communities,” Holmes said. “Instead of having two communities, we want one community.”
The event will run from 1 p.m.-5 p.m. Holmes said they hosted around 7,000 people at the event last year and are hoping to top that number at the upcoming Fiesta.
“It’s kind -of a get-to-know-your-neighbor day,” Holmes said. “We want everyone to come, everyone is invited. We want people to feel like they are one community. We just want the opportunity to have people to talk and get to know each other.”
Cullman Mayor Max Townson spoke at the Fiesta last year and Holmes said he will be at this event, planning to speak at 2 p.m. Everything at Sportman’s Lake Park will also be free.
“There’s no admission, and the rides, activities, food, drinks will all be free,” Holmes said. “We will have a combination of Spanish and Anglo foods available. Door prizes will also be given away.”
The Cullman Rotary Club, several churches, and many individuals participated in planning this year’s fiesta.
“We have a lot of people involved putting this thing together, so everyone come and enjoy some free fun in the community,” Holmes said.
Eckenrod said DJ Kozmic Sound will be at event, and 92 FM-WKUL will be broadcasting live.
