Grant funds first canopies for Baileyton ballfields

BAILEYTON — Those attending baseball and softball games at Baileyton town park now have a place to enjoy games while avoiding the sun.

Last week, the finishing touches were put in place as canopies were installed over six sets of bleachers at the park. “Our main concern is our seniors and those who have skin cancer, Baileyton Mayor Johnny Dyar said. “Before now, it was a safety issue, now this is going to allow them shade from the sun. You don’t realize how happy they are to be out there with their grandkids. We’re blessed.”

The first part of the project was paid for with a $15,000 grant from the Cullman County Community Development Commission (CCCDC).

“We’re very appreciative of the funds we received and appreciative of the work the CCCDC does,” Dyar said. “It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to Cullman County.”

Dyar said the town has plans to put canopies over the remaining six sets of bleachers in the near future.

“We’ll pay for those however we can, whether it be asking for money or through our general funds,” Dyar said.
