Funeral plans announced for local soldier killed in action

No local service planned for Sgt. Skalberg

CULLMAN — Funeral services for Sgt. James L. Skalberg Jr., 25, of Cullman, Ala., have been announced. His funeral is set for Friday, July 13 at a church in Iowa, where he lived with his grandparents for much of his adolescence.

No Cullman memorial service is currently planned.

Skalberg was an artilleryman assigned to 4th Battalion, 1st Field Artillery Regiment. He died June 27 in Afghanistan when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device.

Skalberg has served in the military since 2007, and was among 3,400 soldiers from a brigade conducting combat operations and advising Afghan security forces.

As a young child his family lived in Good Hope, and his parents James and Kelli Skalberg Sr. are of Cullman.

Skalberg leaves behind his wife Jessica, and 11-month-old son Carter.
