Sheriff’s office launches new alert system

Cullman County Sheriff Mike Rainey now has a way to notify local citizens should an emergency happen they need to be aware of.

The new Community Information Service created by Nixle, which was recently launched by the Sheriff's office, is designed to deliver important neighborhood-level public safety and community event notifications through the Internet, e-mail and text message.

In the event there is a train derailment, a truck overturned leaking toxic fumes, a wreck, home invasion, robbery, escaped inmate, or a suspect that has fled,Rainey said those registered would receive a message letting them know to avoid the area or be on the look out for a vehicle or suspect.

"Anything people need to be aware of, we'll let them know it," Rainey said. "This is going to be a great tool."

He added the new service will also help get the community involved.

"We want community involvement, and this will not only help bridge that gap, but allow them to know what's taking place in the community that's a matter of public safety," Rainey said.

Nexle is a new community information service provider built to provide secure and reliable communications. Its authenticated service connects multiple agencies and community organizations to residents in real time, delivering information to geographically targeted consumers.

Currently, the Cullman EMA has an alert service of their own, — SAF-T-Net — , to notify residents when severe weather is near. However, Rainey said his department is working with them to make Nixle a joint alert system.

"We're talking with EMA to see if they're interested in sending weather notifications out through our system," Rainey said.

In order to subscribe to the free service, visit the Cullman County Sheriff's Department's webpage at www.cullmansheriff.org, and click the blue box on the right side of the page.
