Storms cause power outages across county

CULLMAN — After weeks of dry, hot conditions, temperatures dipped long enough for a thunderstorm system to move through Cullman County this weekend — knocking out power and causing damage across the area late Sunday night and early Monday morning.

Power went down late Sunday due to storm-related issues, affecting approximately 2,000 customers in the Holly Pond and Fairview areas.

Though service was restored by early morning, a problem at the Trimble substation had 900 residents in that area without power for some time. Crews worked for several hours to repair a circuit that was damaged in the storm.

No outages were reported in the City of Cullman, which is served by the Cullman Power Board.

Some reports of downed trees trickled in to the Cullman County Emergency Management Agency throughout the day, though no major damage was reported from the storms.

“There were some trees down, that reportedly took down some power lines on the east side of the county, but that’s really all we’ve heard,” EMA Director Phyllis Little said.

With the area bordering on drought conditions the past week, one might think the storm would’ve helped alleviate those concerns — but Little said that is not the case.

“We really haven’t gotten any rain at all, but the cooler temperatures will help,” she said. “As we go into the week, there’s a a little better chance of showers each day, so it’s something to keep an eye on.”

Voluntary water restrictions remain in place, and all local residents are encouraged to take steps to use less water.

In addition to electrical service, the storm also affected Charter Cable Internet and TV customers in Cullman. A Charter rep confirmed service was down for much of Sunday night due to damage, and crews were still working to repair problems late Monday.
