With temperatures creeping over 100 degrees this week, the National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for north Alabama.
Record highs are expected in some areas, and highs are expected to linger in the low triple-digits through at least Tuesday, and possibly longer. Forecasters say the combination of heat and humidity will make it feel like it’s around 110 degrees.
Forecasters say a high pressure dome is expected to keep temperatures at or around 100 degrees.
Cullman Emergency Management Agency Director Phyllis Little encouraged anyone spending prolonged time in the heat to take precautions.
“Wear loose clothing, take frequent breaks, and try not to work outside and do strenuous activities in the heat of the day,” she said. “And, of course, drink lots and lots of water.”
In an effort to prevent any small fires from potentially spreading, the Cullman fire marshal’s office has also issued a burn ban within the city limits.
Cullman Fire Rescue will not issue any burn permits and is prohibiting any outdoor burning, due to concerns the hot conditions could cause a controlled fire to spread.
The ban will remain in effect indefinitely, though it could be lifted if the area receives an ample amount of rainfall.
City implements voluntary water restrictions
With dry conditions expected to continue for at least another week, the City of Cullman is now asking local residents to take voluntary steps to use less water.
Local water source Lake Catoma has dipped to approximately five feet below full pool, and officials want to slow the lake’s drop by decreasing the new demands created by the high temps.
No rain is expected for at least another week, and if dry weather persists, additional measures could potentially be taken in the coming weeks.
