Hanceville moves voting precinct to recreational center

HANCEVILLE — The Hanceville city council has agreed to designate the recreation center as a new voting precinct.

Changing a city’s voting location must be done in an off year of voting, and due to the current needs for voters like parking and bathrooms, the panel elected to change the location.

“We either need to add handicap accessible bathrooms to our current location, or change venues,” Mayor Kenneth Nail said. “We would have more parking, more room, and handicap accessible bathrooms available at the recreational center.”

The previous voting precinct was set at the old Steppville City Hall, and their second location still remains at the Hanceville city hall.

“The Steppville building was in violation of the American Disabilities Act by not having the handicap accessible bathrooms,” Nail said. “So that we can be in compliance with it, the council voted to change venues, therefore asking the probate judge to allow us to move to the rec. center.”

“It has to be approved by the Department of Justice; if it is, we will go forward with it,” Nail said.
