Fugitive alleged child molester found
By Patrick McCrelessA Cullman County man who has been on the run since he was accused of molesting a child in 2006, was found in Mississippi Tuesday.
Jeffery Loring Mcarter, 45, was arrested on a Cullman County grand jury indictment for one count of sodomy in the first degree and one count of sexual abuse in the first degree.
Sheriff Tyler Roden said Mcarter was arrested in Hattiesburg, Miss. and extradited to Cullman County Wednesday. Roden said he did not have the details of how Mississippi authorities came into contact and identified Mcarter.
Roden said the indictment stemmed from a report the sheriff’s office received in February 2006.
“It was alleged he sexually molested a 5-year-old child,” Roden said.
The alleged incident reportedly took place at a residence north of the Baldwin area. Roden said Mcarter and the victim were acquaintances prior to the alleged incident.
Roden said investigators immediately began working on the case, but before they could question Mcarter, he left the area. The case was presented to a grand jury in 2006 and a warrant was issued for Mcarter’s arrest.
“We have not been able to speak to him until the time he was brought into custody,” Roden said.
Roden noted that several attempts were made to locate Mcarter during the investigation and after the grand jury levied the indictment.
“But we believe he had assistance, by friends possibly, to conceal him and hide him,” Roden said. “And some time later, he fled to Mississippi.”
Mcarter is incarcerated at the Cullman County Detention Center on $40,000 bond.
Sodomy in the first degree is a Class A felony, punishable by up to life in prison. Sexual abuse in the first degree is a Class C felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
