ServSafe Program becomes mandatory Jan. 1, 2010

By Tiffany Green

The Cullman County Health Department is sponsoring a ServSafe food safety class Nov. 17-20 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Grumpy’s Pizza.

The 16 hour class meets the requirements for food safety training set forth by the State of Alabama Department of Public Health in the current Food Service Sanitation Rules.

“In 2005, the state health department revamped the regulations on food safety and changed the guidelines,” said Donna Dunn, who retired from the health department after 15 years as a health inspector.

The program will be mandatory by January 1, 2010. At least one person in charge in a risk three or risk four establishment will be required to be certified as a food protection manager and ho has passed the food safety certificate exam.

“The deadline is approaching,” Dunn said. “Facilities like restaurants, daycares, concession stands, anything that cooks and serves raw meat will have to have someone certified.”

Dunn said if establishments get caught without a ServSafe certified person on duty, they will be deducted at least five points off the health inspection rating.

“You must pass the class to be certified,” Dunn said. “Every place must have a certified manager on duty at all times.”

Dunn, who has been teaching the classes, is disappointed at the low turnout.

“Some operators think they don’t have to do it,” she said.

Registration will end Saturday. Classes are $120. The next available class is tentatively set for January.

Classes will also be offered at Wallace State Community College Culinary Department on Monday and Tuesday from 3:30 until 7:30 p.m. for anyone interested at a cost $150.
