CULLMAN —
The cause of a fire that burned nearly 500 acres of fields and forest Saturday along County Road 8 in Bremen remains under investigation.
Volunteer firefighters from Bremen, Cold Springs, Crane Hill, Colony, Loretta, Arkadelphia, and Good Hope battled the fire from 2:38 p.m. until 6 p.m. No homes were destroyed, but firefighters positioned themselves near several homes in the area to prevent the fire from spreading.
“We essentially surrounded the fire and made sure it didn’t jump any roads and take off. The volunteer fire depatments did a great job of working together and keeping the fire from moving over any roads or threatening homes,” said Brandon Williams, chief of the Crane Hill Volunteer Fire Department.
Williams said Bremen, Cold Springs and Arkadelphia were the first at the scene and quickly began battling an area covering nearly 200 acres.
The fire started around the old coal mining pits off County Road 8 and ran through fields and wooded areas before it was contained.
Cullman County Emergency Medical Services and the Alabama Forestry Commission were both at the scene.
“We still don’t know how it started, but the everything is so dry it just crackles under your feet,” Williams said.
