HANCEVILLE —
As early as next week, Hanceville could see a third local business stocking beer and wine, following the city council’s approval of its latest privilege license application.
The council unanimously voted at its regular meeting Thursday to allow Anthony and Jonathan Black, co-owners of Hometown Tobacco, to proceed with their plan to expand their business to include the sale of alcohol.
Anthony Black said Thursday his store will limit its offerings to beer and wine for the time being, although he’d consider paying the pricier $5,000 city fee for liquor sales in the future — once the city’s retail landscape has had a chance to mature.
“Right now, we’re being told that the state won’t put an ABC store in Hanceville, but that could change,” said Black. “I’d want to wait and see if that’s going to happen first, because I don’t want to pay a $5,000 fee and then have a state store open up that can sell the same stuff for less than I’d be allowed to sell it for.”
With the city council’s blessing, Hometown Tobacco — located on Ala. Highway 91 just east of U.S. Highway 31 — now only awaits approval from the Alabama Beverage Control board before it can begin stocking its recently-installed coolers. City clerk Tania Wilcox said the matter of obtaining a license is typically hassle-free, once the city council has voted on the matter.
“You aren’t actually licensed yet until you come in and pay for the license, and you can’t sell until ABC grants you a state approval,” said Wilcox. “But, they’re basically cleared to take those steps now.”
Black said the store will likely change its operating hours to accommodate the increased customer traffic. But the store’s name, as well as its focus on tobacco sales, won’t change.
“We’ll keep our name,” said Black. “We’ll be able to offer something that you can’t find at one place right now in Hanceville, where people can stop in and get beer and tobacco and be on their way.”
The council also set a public hearing for its latest privilege license applicant, the CVS pharmacy located at the northwest corner of Highway 91 and Highway 31. Like Hometown Tobacco, CVS plans to sell only beer and wine products.
