Voter registration deadline today

If you’d like to vote in next month’s presidential election but haven’t yet registered to vote, today’s the day.

Registration for Alabama voters who plan to vote in person at the polls in the Nov. 6 general election ends at the close of the business day today.

To register, go to the Cullman County Board of Registrars, located on the first floor of the Cullman County courthouse. The board of registrars closes today at 4 p.m.

Board chair Nan Auston said Thursday local interest in this year’s bevy of races on the November ballot appears high, if the number of new registrants offers any indication.

“It’s in a lull right now, but it’s been a madhouse,” said Auston Thursday afternoon. “Even if it’s more work for us, we want everybody to vote. It’s fine to come in and register, even if it’s at the last minute.”

Absentee voters have a little more time — until Nov. 1— to apply for an absentee ballot, said Cullman County Circuit Clerk Robert Bates.

“Thursday, Nov. 1 is the deadline to apply for a ballot to vote absentee,” said Bates. “If the ballot is going to be returned to us in the mail, it has to be postmarked no later than Monday. Nov. 5., and received by us in our office no later than noon on Nov. 6.

“If an absentee ballot is going to be hand delivered to us, then you’ve got until the end of the day on Nov. 5. And it’s important to note that, by law, each voter has to bring in his own absentee ballot. You can’t have somebody bring in another person’s ballot — not even a family  member.”

The procedure for applying for an emergency ballot due to an employment scheduling conflict, or to a medical emergency, differs from that of applying for a regular absentee ballot.
